European News Media Forum in Brussels – Coverage of the Event
On November 29th, the second edition of the European News Media Forum kicked off in Brussels. This event served as a unique platform for exchanging ideas in the media industry at the European level. Debates focused on the impact of artificial intelligence on the media and the opportunities associated with AI utilization. The forum is key for those shaping the future of digital and new media.
During the event, European speakers from the press, television, radio, online media, magazines, and other audio/visual producers gathered to discuss industrial transformation. The event was divided into several sessions, each with different formats, including stage presentations, informal talks, small panels, and demonstrations. Registered participants had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussions with the speakers.
Challenges in the Media Industry
During the event, various issues were analyzed with European media executives from across Europe and beyond, as well as with Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, and Věra Jourová, Vice President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency. Representatives from different media organizations sought to answer key questions, such as: What are the latest innovations in the media industry? How can they reach new and niche audiences? How are newsrooms producing new content and formats?
Directions for Media Development
The first edition of the Forum, held in March this year, assisted the European Commission in formulating recommendations for EU member states regarding the safety of journalists. The second edition brought together participants from various countries to delve into key issues facing the media industry, including revenue streams, business models, community engagement, diversity, media convergence, new formats, and partnerships. The discussions marked a step forward in broader efforts aimed at rebuilding and transforming the audiovisual media sector. The scope of the conversations also included increased funding for media projects by the European Union. This initiative aims to create a central hub for press correspondents to collaborate on EU-related matters. The project is set to launch in January 2022, providing a platform for shared work and strengthening cooperation across the media sector.
Combating Disinformation
During the Forum, special attention was also given to the issue of disinformation and its impact on the credibility of the media. Experts discussed various strategies to combat false information, emphasizing the importance of media literacy and international cooperation in this area. They stressed that protecting the quality of information is crucial for maintaining public trust in the media in the digital age.
Innovations in Media
Another key topic discussed at the Forum was the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in automating editorial processes. The solutions presented included using AI for content selection, personalized news delivery, and user data analysis. Participants highlighted the potential benefits of these technologies, such as increased efficiency, more tailored content, and enhanced audience engagement. However, they also pointed out the ethical challenges associated with implementing AI in media. These challenges include the risk of algorithmic bias, where AI systems might unintentionally favor certain types of content or perspectives, and the potential impact on jobs within the media sector.
New Technologies and Formats
The final part of the event focused on the role of innovation in transforming the media landscape. Case studies were presented on the introduction of new formats, such as interactive podcasts and advanced virtual reality (VR) projects. These examples showcased how media companies are experimenting with cutting-edge technologies to engage audiences in novel ways. Participants explored both the successes and challenges encountered during these experiments.
