Competition Format

The competition consisted of three qualifying rounds and a final. In the first round, competitors battled it out in 13-minute heats, performing a series of tricks evaluated by judges based on height, difficulty, and style. In the subsequent rounds, participants executed six 10-minute heats, showcasing their best tricks. Points were awarded for jump height, trick difficulty and technical accuracy, as well as the aesthetic quality of the performance.

Each jump was crucial, and the winner was determined by the total points accumulated across all heats. Kitesurfers, like birds harnessing the wind, executed unique maneuvers and breathtaking tricks including double flips, 360-degree spins, and kiteloops. The competition was intense, with each athlete giving their all to score as many points as possible and advance to the next stages.

First Round: In the first round, competitors showcased their skills with impressive tricks such as triple kite loops, kiteloops with grabs, and megaloops.

Second Round: The competition intensified in the second round as participants pushed their limits to impress the judges and secure a spot in the final. The top 3 kitesurfers advanced to the final.

Final: The final was a spectacular display, with each of the 3 finalists giving their all in pursuit of the coveted title.

Winner and Prizes

Ultimately, after a fierce competition, 19-year-old Andrea Principi from Italy triumphed in the prestigious Red Bull King of the Air 2023 and received the main cash prize. In addition to the prestige and financial reward, Principi also claimed the Red Bull King of the Air trophy, symbolizing supremacy in kitesurfing. Andrea delivered an outstanding performance, executing a series of impressive tricks, including a quadruple kite loop and a kiteloop with an indy grab.

He won the final showdown and proved to be the best, showcasing his strength, extremity, technique, and innovation to secure the victory. Principi set a historic record by receiving three scores of 9 from the judges, marking the first time this achievement has occurred in the history of Red Bull King of the Air. The Italian rider outperformed his fellow countryman Lorenzo Casati and Jeremy Burlando from Spain.

He demonstrated that even the youngest competitors can reach for the highest honors. Expressing his joy, the Italian said, "I’ve fulfilled this dream," referring to his long-awaited ambition of winning this title. His victory in Cape Town, along with his earlier win at the Red Bull Megaloop in the Netherlands, solidified his status as a leading figure in Big Air kiteboarding. The Mystic Move Of The Day went to defending champion and eventual second-place finisher, Lorenzo Casati, who executed a Double Kite Loop, Double-Board Off.
